Description
Nationally recognized expert Robert Emery applies his twenty-five years of experience as a researcher, therapist, and mediator to offer parents a new road map to divorce. Dr. Emery shows how our powerful emotions and the way we handle them shape how we divorce—and whether our children suffer or thrive in the long run. His message is hopeful, yet realistic—divorce is invariably painful, but parents can help promote their children’s resilience. With compassion and authority, Dr. Emery explains:
• Why it is so hard to really make divorce work
• How anger and fighting can keep people from really separating
• Why legal matters should be one of the last tasks
• Why parental love—and limit setting—can be the best "therapy" for kids
• How to talk to children, create workable parenting schedules, and more

This is a very helpful book. I recommend this to anyone who is divorcing and has children. The author's own experience in going through a divorce and sharing his feelings makes the book even more relevant.

Summary: "Very Useful in a Very Difficult Time"
I have not read too many books on this topic but it was recommended by my lawyer. It is extremely helpful for me to understand the thought processes of my self and my soon-to-be ex. There were a lot of "That was me." moments in the book. It also provides a very comprehensive analysis of the different options in separation and divorce. The one I am most interested in was the chapters on the parenting plans of children. It was very reassuring to learn about the expert opinion and experience.

Summary: "A One SIded View"
This book is a very one-sided view of divorce with children. It paints a picture of all "good" things but not at all realistic outcomes of most divorces.

Summary: "A Great Resource for Parents and Professionals"
This book is part of our mediation client library. We share it not only with clients but also with mediators in training who need to learn more about creating developmentally sound parenting plans, dealing with issues which come up as parents learn to separate the parenting relationship from the (now defunct) romantic relationship, and how to help parents redefine their families without falling apart. His section on handling your emotions as a divorcing parent, setting boundaries, and how to behave around your children is something I wish all of our clients would read. It's written in a very engaging way and is very easy to read.
